Illusion of Bliss

Sarah McLachlan.  I remember the first CD I bought that she had recorded, Surfacing, playing it over and over and over again, certain that I would wear it out.  That was ... how many years ago?  1997?  And over the years I've collected more of her music, falling in love with her voice, her style --- the depth of her lyrics and the unique style with which she sings, an indubitable outpouring of her heart and soul into each song to the point of no return.  Her music is a call to arms of the most elusive emotions.

I share only a handful of some of my favorite verses here in my blog.

Spanish Dreams

Your dreams
are your paints
The world
is your canvas
Believing
is the brush
that converts your dreams
into a masterpiece
of reality

Serenade for My Journey

Driving home from the office yesterday -- contemplative, melancholy -- Sarah McLachlan's ethereal voice happened to be the background music for my journey.  I found myself hitting REPEAT more than once.  It had been a while since I'd listened to this moving piece of music.  How I love her voice.  No one else could do THIS song justice.

Never Regret Anything That Made You Smile

While shopping in Blowing Rock in April, I saw a sign in a shop window with these words, and I snapped a picture of it.

I've recreated my own version with creative fonts and imagery.  When I read these words that day, time seemed to stand still for a moment.  They spoke to me deeply.

I thought of maybe painting a sign of sorts with these reminders to hang in my home or in my office.

Because they make me smile.

Long May It Wave

Headed north to spend the Fourth of July with my middle son, his girlfriend, and her family in PA, a state rich in history symbolizing our nation's freedom and independence.

I reflect on this day in history and what it means to me personally, allowing my mind to travel to moments that have stirred emotions of pride, mixed with heartache and gratitude...

  • My first visit to the Unknown Soldier's Tomb as a young girl...
  • Witnessing the endless swell of tombstones in the Arlington National Cemetery...
  • Hearing Lee Greenwood sing God Bless the USA for the very first time...
  • Listening to the symphony play the Star Spangled Banner during the display of fireworks...
  • Watching documentaries of soldiers returning home to their families...
  • Witnessing the bloodshed and heartache while watching war movies...
  • Raising and lowering the American Flag on my elementary school flag pole for the very first time
  • Learning how to dismount and then neatly fold into a tightly wrapped gem our American flag from the school flag pole
  • Standing in attention to the singing of Star Spangled Banner at athletic events (every.single.time) as chills go up and down my spine...
  • Hearing and watching the explosion of fireworks on the Fourth of July
  • Marching in a neighborhood parade with my children, waving flags and singing God Bless America, their bikes and scooters decorated in the Red, White and Blue...
My list could go on and on.  So many proud memories where time seemed to stand still, my heart swelling in allegiance to the many sacrifices and displays of our country's freedom.

Rise up, America, and give thanks for this nation, for our freedom.

Raise Old Glory today, America...wave it high and proudly and long...

Indeed....
Long may it wave

'Tis the star-spangled banner!
Oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the free

and the home of the brave!

No Power, No Fun

Beginning at 7:00 p.m. Friday evening, our area (and surrounding states) was hit by a monster wind storm, unprecedented, so they say.  Uprooted trees, roofs, buildings, etc.  Tornado like winds, widespread damage and power outages.  And at all times -- in 100+ degree temperatures.

In fact, the temperature hit 108 on Friday afternoon, just hours before the storm hit.

Thankfully, no one was hurt.  We lost a shutter off the front of the house, and two HUGE limbs out of two maple trees came crashing down, landing safely in the lawn, rather than on our home -- or car, or bystander!

We were without power -- WITHOUT A.C. -- for the entire weekend.  52+ hours of sweltering heat and no A.C.

We lost all the perishable food in both our frig and freezers.

We had to sleep on the back porch just to be able to breathe...sort of.

Long lines and shortages everywhere for miles:

No gas.

No ice.

No power.

Thank goodness I am always stocked with lots of candles.  They came in handy.

Totally miserable weekend.

Our county courthouse was closed today, many people STILL without power.

I was able to finally catch up today with chores, laundry.  Cleaned and sanitized the refrigerator and freezers, then set out to restock our groceries.

I'm exhausted.

Weekends are supposed to be the time to recharge, unwind.  Have fun?

Fun?  Not.

Just glad -- so VERY glad -- it's over.

My Book Review: Bared To You

The book I had begun reading just before leaving on vacation, "Bared To You," a Crossfire novel, by Sylvia Day...

Waste of time.

Darn.  I wanted to be dazzled.

The plot was woefully lacking.

Redundant.  Think pushing the REWIND button over and over again while watching a movie.  Sex, sex and more sex.  Really steamy, hot sex.

Okay.  Whatever.  Not that really good sex isn't a wonderful thing.  Of course it is.  But there's more to a "good book" than just "good sex."

No plot.  No ah-ha moment, no crescendo.  No oh-wow-this-speaks-to-me moments.  At times I even found the content to be somewhat cheesy.  At times creepy?  Maybe even a tad disturbing and depressing.

In fact, it is apparently one in a series of more no-plot-just-good-sex books.  DOGSTICKFIGURE

The hopeless romantic in me will not budge:  If it had been a great romance with a juicy, substantive plot AND GOOD SEX, now THAT would do it for me.

Yes, yes, YES!  (Play on words!)

I'll give it a ... 2?
