"Coloring is my thing," she said.

I'm transcribing an interview for an attorney friend of mine.  It was an interview of a seven-year-old little girl by a social worker.  To help put the child at ease, the social worker prefaced the interview with some general questions to help establish rapport between the two of them.  One of the questions was:  "What do you like to do for fun?"

The little girl's response, in the sweetest, most straightforward voice, made me smile inside.  Such innocence and sincerity from the mouths of babes...

Q     Did you get to play in the snow yesterday?
A Yeah.  My mommy build one snowman.  I build two snowmans.  And one of them was Lion King.
Q One of them was Lion King?  Oh, wow.  I bet that was fun.
A And sometimes for fun I like to also -- uh, when I get nervous I like to get out a reading book and read it because -- or, when I'm really, really nervous, I just go out -- I just look outside and it calms me down.  And when I get so mad, I just get a coloring book and some crayons and color.  Because coloring is like my thing.

Wow.
So simple, isn't it?
We can learn life lessons from children.

When I'm nervous [stressed],
I'll get out a good book to read.

And when I get really, really nervous
[overly stressed or upset],
I'll just look outside because it calms me down.

And when I get mad
[annoyed/frustrated/irritated],
I'll just get out my coloring book
[easel/projects]
and crayons
[paints]
and color
[create].

Problems solved.

I'm Addicted to Painting

Researching, watching youtube tutorials, collecting Pinterest images, researching some more.  And I finally took the plunge into chalk paint mania.

I have it bad.  I can't stop.  What must I do?

My personality can be that way sometimes.  I get fixated on something and I can't let go.

LET GO.  No.  I refuse.

Photos of my latest projects...

I couldn't find a before of this cabinet, but it was solid black.
Nothing exciting.
Now it's a mixture of mustardy-caramel, a cream dry brush wash, and dark wax
with some distressing to allow some of the black to shine through.

It looks so much better in its home than it did as solid black.
(My "Jazz" half bath.)

I never liked this mantle from day one.
It's butt-ugly, dated orangey-oak.  Nasty.

And now...

Soft off white, light distressing, dark wax overcoat.
(I also touched up the brick for added dimension!)

(Loving the distressed touches!)

When it was time to apply the waxing steps,
I made a few mistakes...it made me sweat a little with nervousness.
(I now know that it's best to apply clear wax BEFORE applying dark wax.)
Oh, crap!  What now?
But I worked through them with improvisation.
Saved.
Practice makes perfect.
Not bad for my first project.

Weekends rock.

Musical Pictures

I may have blogged about this once before -- my lines of memory are somewhat blurred.  My Friday evening glass of wine may have a wee bit to do with that, but not entirely.

Musical Pictures.  It was a distinct and vivid memory of kindergarten for me.  In the early afternoon, just after lunch and "recess," we were asked to lie down on the floor on little mats -- yes, of course they were...little mats for little people -- and rest a bit while listening to music.  Most of the time, at least as memory serves, it was classical music, or something similar.  Always instrumental.  This may have been my first exposure to classical (such a shame...INFANTS should be exposed at an early age to classical in my humble opinion).

After listening for about 20 minutes or so, we were then handed large sheets of sketching paper -- I remember it was sort of off white and sturdy... funny how we remember these details of life that leave lasting impressions -- and we were asked to illustrate with markers, paint, pencils or crayons the music that we were hearing.  What did it call to our minds?

It was my favorite class.

To this day, I think about musical pictures all the time.  I'll be driving down the road and hear a song and I think in images, the brush strokes of my mind filling in the details, whether fiction or reality.  At times quite vivid detail.  And for those few moments in time, I've escaped to that place in "my picture."

It's THIS part of my personality that most people may find a little wacko.  But truth is, it's an INTEGRAL part of who I am.  How we long to be understood, not misinterpreted.  Because I'm NOT wacko.  It's just who I am, who I've become over time.  And these traits aren't always obvious...aren't always seen on the surface.  In fact, mostly are not.  But dare tap into my heart, scratch the surface a little, and you will likely find the deeper wacko side of me.  The dreamer.

This artist, Ludovico Einaudi,
SUCH A BEAUTIFUL NAME, I want to repeat it over and over
has become one of my favorites.

I discovered him via Pandora about a year or so ago.  I keep researching, sampling his music now and then.  I hear most of it on my Windham Hill station of Pandora.

Arriving home late from work today, tired and thankful the week was finally over, I poured myself a glass of wine and clicked onto YouTube in search of some escape music.  Release. And I found this.

Experience
Its seducing effect on me was deeply penetrating.  An ushering of vivid musical pictures ...

Listen to Einaudi's "Experience" -- don't cheat yourself, listen all the way through, you won't regret the ebb and tide -- and indulge your mind's eye of illustrations. Abandon all other thoughts, problems, duties, commitments, rules ... as you let the music release you.  Are you there yet?  What do you see?  Is it anything short of spectacular?

Go ahead.  Breathe.  Escape.  It's Friday.  It's time to exhale.

Rain Music

Crescendos of raindrops
beat against the windowsill,
a symphony to me in the quiet before dawn...
Sweet simple joys of stillness

It Has To Come From Within

Man loses 40 pounds,

gains a six-pack and $50,000

Yep.
This got my attention first thing this morning
over my morning coffee via Yahoo
before heading out to the gym.

This guy's success was driven by health issues,
having had a few scares and a family history of heart problems.
And now look at him.
He's 45.

Im way impressed
This proves it can be done.
Of course, a Bodybuilding.com contest offering $50,000
would be nice incentive, no?
(How long since I've logged on to that site?  Too long)
And how nice that he's treating his wife with his winnings!?!
(Well, bless.her.heart.  She gets twice rewarded)

Regardless of the reason, the point is, he did it.
HE DID IT.
AND LOOK AT HIM!

His advice?

It Has to come from within
You have to have that want-to
it has to be internally driven

And he's right.

"from within"

He's absolutely right.

Eyes That See Things Much Too Far

I've been self-absorbed in otherness all day today...
Thoughts seeming to elude cohesiveness.
This
then
that
and
back and forth
from
then
to
now.

Drifting.

Happily tinkering,
while the clatter of my thoughts
drown the silence of the air around me.

And ya know what?
I've concluded that sometimes
I just need to do the don'ts of life.

I've had most of the day to myself,
and while drifting,
I've been cleaning and sorting and categorizing and purging.
Keep this, toss that.

Remember?
Yes, I remember...

I've finally made myself sit down and eat something.
My stomach has been empty, growling reminders at me...
Hey? Ya gonna feed me or what?

But I'm intent on finishing my list...and that list keeps growing.

Warm weather.
It's appeases my soul.
As I pass by in haste, I keep glancing out the kitchen window to the patio.
The flowers are moving gently on their stage.
They love showing off.
And I love watching the show.
They make my heart smile,
evoking an intimacy within me.
Intimacy doesn't always have to be a physical thing.
Rather a search inward.

Okay.
Time's up.
Until next time.

Moms Don't Miss a Thing

When Mom found my diaphragm,
I told her it was a bathing cap for my cat.
- Liz Winston

I remember those days.
When I was young and stupid and naive enough
to think that Mom didn't know
what I was REALLY up to.
All of those times when I was up to
"no good"
and thought I had her fooled.
I thought I was smooth as silk
slick as a greased pig.

NOT

She didn't miss a thing.
It's funny now that I think about it.
I desperately want to sit with her some day for
that heart-to-heart, laughing our butts off...
so much left to be said...

We ran out of time.

A young mother experiencing her
first-born's first birthday...

I had no idea that little tow head
would end up halfway across the world some day.

My Mother’s Day Weekend in Photos
A visit to a local greenhouse...

I chose THIS one...because...
IT'S BLUE.
All things blue.
BEAUTIFUL BLUE.

It was a happy and heavenly visit.

It rained Saturday, so I spent the day indoors recovering
my patio cushions with the fabric I bought in Winston Salem
a few weeks ago.

Chessie approved.
"This will do just fine," she said.

              A package?  For ME???

Fascinated by all the Japanese jibberish
that decorated the wrappings...
I must insist on a translation!

 I just stared at this.
"Hm," I said.

Love notes, cards and a pedicure!

Chessie enjoying her new patio "bed"

They turned out perfectly!
But I definitely need to finish painting the rocker.
Oops.
After I was served dinner on the screened porch,
I was served a glass of wine by the fire pit on the patio.
PERFECT!

Thanks, you guys.

This mother is blessed.
